Ted Kidwell, RPT (Registered Piano Technician) is a member of the Piano Technician's Guild, and regularly attends meetings of the Redwood Chapter in Eureka. He apprenticed with Ron Wallis in Fort Bragg, and also attends piano technician conferences to update his knowledge.

The title of "Registered Piano Technician" must be earned by passing a series of examinations. There is a written exam, testing basic knowledge of piano design, tuning theory, repair and general piano technology. Next, a technician takes a standardized tuning exam. The next phase of the examinations is a "technical test" in which the examinee must prove his or her mastery of piano repair and regulation on an actual piano.

Ted graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a degree in trombone performance. He performed as a free-lance musician in the Bay Area for 12 years. He is also a builder, kitchen-designer, and cabinetmaker.

Along with his wife, Eva, he has restored the Weller House in Fort Bragg and operates it as a bed and breakfast inn.
